How to make changes to a large number of devices

Often, customers with a large number of device monitors need to make changes such as add a new email alert, update the polling frequencies , etc. Laboriously editing each individual monitor can be very time consuming. IsItUp provides a Bulk Change wizard to make such changes easier to make. As another alternative to the Bulk Change, you can also export the device file to a CSV file and edit it with any of the commonly available spreadsheet programs.

To quickly get started, first:

Download and install IsItUp for a free 30 day trial. Just click on the following link:

The easiest way to manage a large number of devices is to use Bulk Change.    Bulk Change works on the devices selected in the left window.  If no devices are selected, it works on all the devices.  This allows you to select a subset of all of your devices to make changes to or just modify them all. To invoke Bulk Change, right click to display the short cut menu and select the Bulk Change menu item as show below.

The Bulk Change wizard is a little confusing to start with but is really very simple to use.  When you launch the wizard, it scans your device list and finds all unique instances of Frequency, Maintenance Schedules, Email Alerts, and Paging alerts. For example, if you had five devices with frequencies as follow:

Device A  - 1 minute

Device B  - 1 minute

Device C - 2 minutes

Device D  - 5 minutes

Device E - 2 minutes

Then you would have three unique instances. Devices A, B would make up the first instance with a value 1 minute. Devices C,E would make up the second instance with a value 2 minutes. Devices D would be the third instance with a value of 5 minutes. The wizard would display the three instances as shown below.

If you change the value of the first item in the above dialog from 2 minutes to 10 minutes, then every occurrence of 2 minutes in your device list will be changed to 10 minutes.   After you run the wizard, your new devices list would be as follows:

Device A  - 1 minute

Device B  - 1 minute

Device C 10 minutes

Device D  - 5 minutes

Device E 10 minutes

The other fields (Maintenance Schedules, Email alerts, and Paging alerts) work in a similar way. However, they have additional options to Add a new item (Maintenance Schedule, Email alert, etc), delete an item, and Copy All which take an existing item and copies it to all devices. Below is an example of the Email Notification step of the Bulk Change wizard.
